Are you thinking of using ChatGPT for translation? Do you know if Chat GTP is keeping your data safe? Well, the short answer is no, so you should not feed the chatbot any confidential information. The language service industry is evolving rapidly, and there is no denying that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing a significant role in this transformation. At Win & Winnow, we are early adopters, and we believe in leveraging technology to offer better and faster language services for our clients, that’s why we love the opportunities the AI industry is offering. Nevertheless, we know we have to apply these new developments with caution, for example in the data security department.
We already covered in a previous article how tools such as Chat GTP are showing us what the next steps in Machine Translation will look like. But we still need to move cautiously in the new territory. In this blog, we’ll explore some examples of where we might start using AI tools such as Chat GTP without endangering your data.
How to safeguard your data in Chat GTP
First, did know you can be an early adopter while keeping your data safe? To do this, you can set up your own OpenAI account and ask the company to exclude your data from its training data—it will save it for 30 days for legal reasons. This allows you to test this technology without risking data confidentiality.
How to opt-out your Data on ChatGPT:
1. Head to this OpenAI Data Opt-Out Request.
2. Type in the email address associated with the account.
3. Enter the Organization ID.
4. Type in your Organization Name found in your ChatGPT settings.
5. Solve the Captcha, and the data opt-out form will be submitted to OpenAI. A copy of the form will also be mailed to your user account with ChatGPT.
Remember that the request is submitted via Google Forms, and you should not include any passwords or other sensitive data. For more on OpenAI’s ChatGPT service, ensure you read through its privacy policy and the ChatGPT terms of use.
This will offer a safer experience while using this revolutionizing tool, but the recommendation is not to enter confidential information anyway.
Uses of ChatGPT for translation. Be an early adopter.
Starting to use and explore the capabilities of AI tools such as Chat GTP is a big part of understanding what the world might look like in a few years! It’s key jumpstarting now in the AI train.
And even if we cannot use the chatbot to translate or generate glossaries for clients—because of confidentiality issues and other reasons we’ll mention later!—, we started exploring its abilities with, for example, public materials from our own company… things such as this blog.
- Terminology: We can work on terminology extraction and glossaries, it can even make it into a form!
- Machine translation: You play around with multiple languages or variables, and explore how different prompts might work with the tool.
- Content creation: One of the best uses – in our opinion – to start applying right now is in this field. Explore the possibilities of ChatGPT as a tool for creating blogs, social media posts, scripts, or any other format you need.
- Non-sexist language: It’s fantastic thinking outside the box, so if you are struggling to rephrase something to avoid gender biases, you can ask ChatGPT for a few options.
- Proofreading: you can ask it to correct your grammar, it’s quite good at it!
- Style and tone: you can ask it to make a text more formal or informal, for example.
These are just some applications in our daily tasks. Keep in mind that all of this should be corrected by you. ChatGPT might not be a human, but it still can make mistakes. In this, we’ll dive now: why you shouldn’t be using it to translate.
Using ChatGPT for translation shouldn’t be your final choice
What ChatGPT excels at is creating text, it is a large language model (LLM) after all. But even if that is its expertise, you shouldn’t create a blog for your SEO strategy in ChatGPT and post it without adding a human touch. Information might be wrong, it might be repetitive and Google will flag it as AI-generated, and it will harm your SEO positioning. The same applies to any other task you give the chatbot, it cannot create final products.
But at the same time, starting a blog post in ChatGPT is a great idea, because it helps to get past the hardest part: getting started. Correcting a blog spot that’s a bit repetitive and basic is easier than writing from scratch a great article. This works for any other task—always taking into account the data safety issue—, if you ask the chatbot to help you erase a gendered expression, you should take its ideas but make the final decision and adjustments yourself. This also applies to making corrections, and translations, among others.
